- About the artwork
JEAN BENARD, MLA PARIS 'Medaille d'or' 1889, France This pair of monumental vases is by artist Jean Benard and executed by MLA in Paris. They won a gold medal at the 1889 World's Fair in Paris. The stamp on the bottom of the vases proudly mentions this. The cloisonné technique and the use of gold leaf in the butterfly wings is closely related to the work of Theodor Deck. Beautifully preserved and rich in colour. A prelude to Art Nouveau.
