  • About the artist

Adriana Johanna Haanen (1814–1895) was one of the most successful female artists of 19th-century Dutch painting, known for her refined and lively still lifes. Born in Oosterhout into a distinctly artistic family, she was trained by her father along with her siblings, but she was the only one to achieve widespread recognition and commercial success in the Netherlands.

Haanen specialized in paintings of flowers and fruit, in which she developed an exceptional sense of detail, color, and texture. Her work balances realism with an almost tangible sensuality: dewdrops, ripe fruit, and delicate petals appear to be brought to life with great precision and attention. In addition to these classical still lifes, she also created—albeit rarely—paintings of living and deceased animals, in which her powers of observation are once again evident.

Her talent did not go unnoticed. In 1845 she was appointed an honorary member of the Royal Academy in Amsterdam, and in 1862 she received a gold medal from the City of Amsterdam for her contribution to the exhibition of Living Masters. Her work was exhibited internationally, including in Antwerp, Brussels, Bremen, and Paris, and enjoyed a strong market position—Haanen managed to sell her paintings at high prices.

She spent a significant part of her life in Oosterbeek, where she lived and worked together with the painter Maria Vos within a lively artists' colony. Their shared home, Villa Grada, became a place of artistic exchange and dedication.

Adriana Johanna Haanen leaves behind an oeuvre that excels in precision and beauty, but also testifies to independence and business acumen—an artist who was far ahead of her time, both in her work and in her position within the art world.
