About the Artist

Marie van Regteren Altena was a Dutch painter, born in Amsterdam in 1868. She was part of the Amsterdamse Joffers, a group of women artists in Amsterdam who met weekly in the last quarter of the 19th century to paint and show their works together. They were known for their style that followed the example of the Amsterdam Impressionists and were all members of the Amsterdam artist societies Arti et Amicitiae and Sint Lucas. The Amsterdamse Juffers mostly painted still life and portraiture. Van Regteren Altena mainly painted still lives and flowers. She was from an aristocratic family. Her brother Martinus van Regteren Altena also was a painter and her sister Jo van Regteren Altena was a designer. She went to the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (National Academy of Fine Arts) in Amsterdam. She visited Prague, Rome and South-France. In 1917, van Regteren Altena moved back to Amsterdam, where she died in 1958.
