Dorus Brekelmans (1972) is a well-known name in the art world in the Netherlands. His style, which is distinctive and unique, ensures that his work is regularly exhibited and represented by leading art galleries in the Netherlands. He also won no less than twice in the TV program Sterren op het Doek.

His paintings are figurative with often bright colors. Realism is the basis in his work, but you would still call him an impressionist rather than a realist. In an expressive and spontaneous style he applies the paint roughly and testily. He works with brushes and palette knives to add certain accents in impasto. In both acrylic and oil paint he shows various subjects on canvas: people, children, beach scenes, animals, movement, dance, sports and portraits.

“I want to keep the chosen image 'readable' and ultimately there should be no ambiguity or abstraction.”

Brekelmans studied Publicity Drawing at the S.I.S.A in Antwerp, Belgium from 1991 to 1994. This study was continued at the Karel De Grote University College where he chose the field of Applied Graphics and Illustration. He graduated in 1998, obtained his master's degree and immediately started working as an independent illustrator and painter. In recent years he has increasingly focused on painting and is enjoying increasing interest in his work.
