  • About the artist

Hundertwasser was born Friedrich Stowasser in Vienna on December 15, 1928, and in 1948 he attended the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts for 3 months. Friedensreich Hundertwasser was deeply moved and influenced by an exhibition by Egon Schiele, and he gradually began to develop his own style. In 1949 he took the name "Hundertwasser" and undertook travels within Europe and North Africa.

His first exhibition showed his work between 1953 and 1956 in Vienna, Cologne, Paris and Milan; followed in 1958 with his "Manifesto against rationalism in architecture. The first film was in 1966, in 1974 he made a pedestrian zone in Vienna, followed by a housing project in 1980. In the same year he was awarded the highest Austrian award and Hundertwasser held a speech against atomic energy. In 1985 he again made a Hundertwasser house for the city of Vienna.

Fridensreich Hundertwasser saw himself as an innovator of the Viennese Jugenstil, painted ornaments and made colorful paintings. His aim was to save the environment and to create a humane form of living. This is also reflected in the buildings he designed. He lived his last years in New Zealand. Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser died on 19. February 2000 on board the ship Queen Elisabeth 2.
