  HE HONGBEI(1969)
  
  HE HONGBEI werd geboren in 1969 in Chongqing, in de provincie Sichuan in het zuidwesten van China. Al van jongs af wist zij dat zij schilder wilde worden. In 1992 studeerde zij af aan het Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. In 1996 ging ze met haar man vanwege zijn beroep naar de USA en zette daar haar werk voort. Er volgde in deze periode een aantal tentoonstellingen en prijzen in Noord-Amerika en Azië. In 2006 keerde ze terug vanwege hun grote gehechtheid aan China en vestigde zich in Beijing waar ze sindsdien heeft gewoond en haar fantastische studio onderhoudt.

  HE HONGBEI is een sterk op waarden gebaseerde schilder met oog voor de veranderingen in de wereld en de spirituele invloed op de persoonlijkheid en gemoedstoestand. He Hongbei’s denkt veel na over het innerlijke leven en gevoelens van vrouwen in China. Dit is een thema dat steeds in haar werk terugkeert.
  
  Ze laat het innerlijke leven van Chinese vrouwen met betrekking tot liefde, geduld en wachten, onvervulde wensen en verlangens, en de immer op handen zijnde spanning tussen traditie en moderniteit, die zo kenmerkend is voor de hedendaagse Chinese vrouwen terugkomen in haar kunst.
  Het eerste dat onze aandacht trekt bij het kijken naar de vrouwen die we krijgen, is hun verbazingwekkende schoonheid. De gezichten zijn model-achtig, een mix tussen maskers (zoals een schild dat beschermt tegen de buitenwereld) en gevoelige gezichten, op de een of andere manier onwerkelijk in hun perfectie en toch zeer aanwezig in uiterlijk.
  HONGBEI zegt zelf:’ Dit is het ideaal dat onze maatschappij wil en de druk waaraan vrouwen worden blootgesteld om aan dit ideaal te voldoen, is aanzienlijk.
  Omdat we voortdurend worden onderwezen door advertenties, kan ‘mooi zijn’ het best worden bereikt door te winkelen, aangezien het consumeren van gadgets van topmerken ons in ieder geval mooi kan maken. We weten echter allemaal dat de consequentie van deze aanpak een vicieuze cirkel kan zijn: “voel de druk, consumeer, voel je mooi, word ouder, voel de druk, consumeer, voel je mooi …”, waardoor je een zekere leegte creëert. Tot het uiterste wordt het leven een ondiepe bel van illusies’.
  De kracht van de kunst van He Hongbei ligt zowel in het concept van haar schilderijen, de ‘boodschap’ die ze overbrengen, als de technische realisatie. Een fascinerende visualisatie van onschuld, die herinnert aan Europese renaissanceportretten, en toch zijn de vrouwen die we zien heel kenmerkend voor het moderne China.
  HE HONGBEI behoort bij de Top 10 vrouwelijke kunstenaars in China en haar schilderijen zitten in veel top museale collecties. GALERIE KUNSTBROEDERS is trots haar te vertegenwoordigen met een aantal door haarzelf vervaardigde litho’s
  
  
  
  
• About the artist

  He Hongbei’s latest reflections on women’s inner life and feelings in China

  He Hongbei’s most recent series of oil paintings are a seamless and consequential development of her work and consistent approach to art .Already when winning an important award at the First Guangzhou Biennale in 1992,the focus of her creation was two young girls playing a traditional Chinese musical instrument. Later,her”Painted Letters”described the inner life of Chinese women with respect to love,patience and waiting,unfulfilled wishes and desires,and the ever imminent tension between tradition and modernity,which is so characteristic for today’s Chinese females.

  The key to understand these paintings lies in the reflection of the inner life of the young women exhibited,articulated by a careful and sensitive coloring,coupled with high virtuosity of form and brushing,and a certain characteristic harmony and balance in the composition of the paintings.All of those are virtues that are equally attributable to He Hongbei’s latest creations.

  The first thing that catches our eyes when looking at the women we are presented is their amazing beauty. The faces are model-style,a mix between masks (like a shield that protects from the outside world) and sensitive faces, somehow unreal in their perfection and yet very present in appearance. This is the style that our society wants women to be-“beauty”stands above all,and the pressure that females are exposed to in order to be up to this ideal is significant.

  As we are constantly taught by advertisements, “be beautiful”can best be achieved by shopping,since consuming top brand gadgets can make us at least feel beautiful. However , we all know that the consequence of this approach might be a vicious cycle: “feel the pressure, consume, feel beautiful, get older, feel the pressure, consume, feel beautiful…”,thus creating a certain emptiness. Taken to the extreme, life becomes a shallow bubble of illusions.

  The strength of He Hongbei’s art lies both in the concept of her paintings, the “message”that they convey, and the technical realization. A fascinating visualization of innocence, reminding of European Renaissance portraits, and yet the females that we are presented with are of a type which is very characteristic of modern China. Not often can we witness such a skilled and also non artificial union of styles. The paintings are a high quality demonstration of the creativity of Chinese artists.
