  • About the artwork
“Travel fuels the imagination” is a variant on an old saying which certainly applies to Michiel Schrijver (1957). Painting is a form of travel for him, after all. And the way it amazes him is a great motivation to paint. Amazement at everything he discovers en route in his inner world, becaust that is what appears in his paintings.
  • About the artist

Michiel Schrijver (Blaricum, 1957) is a Dutch painter from Baarn.

He was educated from 1976 at Dartington School of Art (Art & Design), Devon, England and the Byam Shaw School of Art in London (Foundation course) and from 1978 Michiel Schrijver attended the Camberwell School of Art (B.A. Fine Arts), where he graduated in 1981.

From 1982 he worked in Amsterdam on paintings, graphics and etchings for commercial purposes. Much of his work was commissioned in his gallery and studio in the centre of Amsterdam. Since 1993 he has worked exclusively as an autonomous artist. His paintings are executed in acrylics. Painting is for Schrijver a journey through his inner world. His work is preceded by sketchbooks full of ideas. When the idea seems good enough, it is put on canvas. In his painted worlds architecture plays an important role. The sea is also often present, and if it is not visible, then at least tangible. He himself regards his work as a logbook of imaginary journeys.
