    After initially starting to paint almost exclusively still lifes, Gerrit Wijngaarden's choice of subject matter gradually expanded to include trompe l'oeils, (profile) portraits, landscapes, interiors, and "magical realist" depictions.

    Silence is the common thread running through his work, often with a certain threat or melancholy in the background or foreground.

    Many of his still lifes focus on so-called abstract values ​​such as color, form, composition, contrast, and texture, while the artist's sense of life is more strongly evident in the landscapes and interiors.

    Gerrit Wijngaarden exhibits regularly, creates independent work, and works on commission.
