18,5 cm - About the artistFred Carasso (1899, Carignano, near Turin, Italy – 1969, Amsterdam), Italian name Federico Antonio Carasso; pseudonym Fred Deltor, was an Italian-Dutch painter, draughtsman, ceramist, medallist and sculptor. Carasso was born into an Italian family of handicraftsmen. In 1922, two weeks after the take-over of power by Mussolini, he moved to Paris, where he worked as a cabinet maker from 1922 to 1928. In the period 1928-1933, he lived in Mechelen and Brussels. From 1935 onwards he lived and worked in the Netherlands, since 1944 in Amsterdam. He became friends with Maurits Dekker, Han Wezelaar, Leo Braat, Piet Esser and Gerrit van der Veen. He drew and painted animals, figures, nudes, abstracts. Since 1945 he also worked as a sculptor. In Rotterdam, he created the 46 meter high Nationaal Monument voor de Koopvaardij (National Monument for the Merchant Navy) in memory of the 3500 victims at sea during the Second World War. It was finished in 1965. He designed and produced many sculptures, statues, and monuments for many cities, Amsterdam, Willemstad (Curaçao), The Hague, Eindhoven, Gouda, Utrecht, etc. From 1956 to 1969 Carasso was a professor at the Jan van Eyck Academie in Maastricht.
