  • About the artist

On Kawara, a distinguished Japanese conceptual artist, made a significant mark in the art world from his base in SoHo, New York City, starting in 1965. His career was marked by numerous solo and group exhibitions, notably including his participation in the Venice Biennale in 1976.

Born on December 24, 1932, in Kariya, Japan, Kawara embarked on his artistic journey after graduating from Kariya High School in 1951. He relocated to Tokyo, setting the stage for a life rich in cultural and artistic exploration. In 1959, Kawara ventured to Mexico, drawn by his father's role as the director of an engineering company. This three-year period was a formative time for Kawara, filled with painting, formal art education, and immersive exploration of the Mexican landscape and culture. Between 1962 and 1964, he oscillated between New York and Paris, absorbing the vibrant art scenes of both cities. His travels across Europe eventually led him to settle in New York City in 1965, where he continued to live and work intermittently until his passing in 2014.

Kawara's work is emblematic of a pivotal shift in the conceptual art movement that began to take shape in the mid-1960s. This era saw artists moving away from personal emotion and subjective expression, instead embracing art as a vehicle for pure information or ideation, minimizing the presence of the art object itself. Kawara, alongside contemporaries such as Lawrence Weiner, Joseph Kosuth, and Hanne Darboven, played a crucial role in elevating language and conceptual frameworks within the art world. His contributions are a testament to the rich, intellectual tapestry of conceptual art, marking him as a pivotal figure in its evolution.
