  • About the artist

Gerard Schäperkötter was originally a graphic designer and in 1914 chose free painting. His approach to the medium was spontaneous and free and, after a figurative run-up, led to powerful compositions in the 1960s and 1970s. In their balancing act between abstraction and figuration, these are somewhat reminiscent of the lyrical-abstract art of the Ecole de Paris. The painter created a new reality from his memory and imagination, which he often elaborated on in themes such as beaches, walls or gardens.

Gerard Schäperkötter was a modest artist who composed his canvases and gouaches very calmly. He created a new reality from his memory and imagination. Schäperkötter was inspired by the expressionism of the Cobra movement and École de Paris.

His approach to the medium was spontaneous and free and led – after a figurative run-up in the 1960s and 1970s – to powerful compositions. Schäperkötter's works of art are characterized by the alternation of lyrical abstraction and penetrating use of colour. Common themes are beaches, walls and gardens.
