Janhendrik Dolsma (Groningen, 1950) is known as an exclusive ‘mudflat painter’. He studied drawing at the Academie Minerva and went on to become an art teacher. After several years he decided to start painting and exhibiting again. Despite the limited possibilities of his specialism, he has managed to produce an extraordinary range of paintings in which he captures the beauty and the mystery of our typically Dutch seas and skies. Whilst the light portrays the atmosphere and its reflection onto the ocean conveys the sheer spaciousness, the sun is never directly visible but always behind a cloud or shining from above. The sense of depth that Dolsma elicits is almost mesmerizing.
