  • About the artist

Cole Morgan, born in 1950 in New York, is an American artist who grew up in New Mexico. In 1971, he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. After graduating, he moved to Europe, where he studied art history and lithography at the Centro di Arte Grafica in Florence from 1971 to 1973. He then continued his education at the Vrije Academie in The Hague in 1973 and 1974. After graduating, he taught drawing and painting at the York Road School in Dublin, Ireland. Morgan currently lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium.

Morgan is known for his abstract expressionist style, in which he uses collage techniques. His compositions consist of multiple layers and are often based on mathematical patterns. He integrates various materials such as shells, feathers, pebbles, pieces of paper, cardboard and wood into his works, and sometimes also images of houses and churches. A striking feature of his abstract works is the use of shadows, which gives the forms an apparent three-dimensionality and adds a sense of depth and mystery.

Morgan describes his creative process as “controlled spontaneity,” combining elements such as color, texture, and shape to create complex and intriguing compositions. He invites the viewer to explore his works and discover new details and meanings, resulting in an ongoing dialogue between the artwork and the viewer.

Morgan’s work has been exhibited worldwide, with exhibitions in cities such as Seoul, Zurich, Maastricht (TEFAF), Cologne, Dublin, Hong Kong, San Francisco, Amsterdam, Beijing, and Chicago. His artworks can be found in both public and private collections worldwide, testifying to his international recognition and influence on the contemporary art scene.
