  • About the artist

Merab Gagiladze (1972, Tbilisi) is a Georgian artist whose work is deeply rooted in the rich cultural and historical layers of his native Tbilisi. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Tbilisi, where he developed a classical foundation that he would later combine with a more narrative and symbolic visual language.

Gagiladze is known for his interpretations of stories, myths, and legends from Georgia. In his work, centuries-old traditions come to life, often translated into a contemporary visual form. His compositions contain elements that refer to folklore, religion, and historical narratives, giving figures and scenes an almost timeless, dreamlike quality.

Georgia's cultural position—at the crossroads of Europe and Asia—plays a central role in his oeuvre. Gagiladze manages to capture this unique blend of European and Eastern influences in his style, in which classical painting, ornamentation, and symbolism come together. This creates a layered image that feels both recognizable and mysterious. Through his work, Gagiladze contributes to the preservation and reinterpretation of Georgian cultural heritage, while simultaneously building a bridge to an international audience.
