Christiaan Andreas Sepp (circa 1710, Goslar – August 2, 1775, Amsterdam) was a German-Dutch draftsman, engraver, and entomologist who made a significant contribution to natural history illustration in the eighteenth century. Born in Goslar, Germany, he settled in Amsterdam mid-life—at the time a center of science, trade, and printing—where he created his most influential work.
Sepp gained fame primarily through his extremely detailed and accurate illustrations of insects, in which he combined artistic refinement with scientific precision. His work aligns with the tradition of natural history documentation in which observation and aesthetics went hand in hand. At a time when the study of insects—entomology—was rapidly developing, Sepp made an essential visual contribution to understanding and classifying species with his engravings.
His illustrations are characterized by clear composition, subtle coloring, and a keen eye for detail, depicting not only the adult insect but often also the various stages of its life cycle. In doing so, he contributed to a more dynamic and complete picture of nature, in line with the growing interest in systematics and biological development during the Enlightenment.
Sepp collaborated with publishers and scientists in Amsterdam and laid the foundation for a family business that would remain active in the production of natural history works for generations to come. His legacy lives on in the influence his work has had on both science and the art of nature illustration, in which precision, beauty, and knowledge come together.
