Hermanus Davinus (Herman) Heuff (The Hague, 9 July 1875 - Heemstede, 1 July 1945) became known as a painter in the style of the Hague School. From 1907 onwards he mainly made etchings and drawings. Heuff took evening classes at the Hague Academy, under Floris Arntzenius. He painted cityscapes and old places in Zeeland, South Holland and Italy. Heuff had contact with Theo van Hoytema, from whom he took lessons, and Willem de Zwart.
In the years around the First World War, Heuff became friends with Anton Pieck, who printed his first etching on Heuff's instructions on the press that was present in Heuff's studio on the Broeksloot.
In the 1930s he went blind. That is why a benefit exhibition was held in June 1933 and the Herman Heuff Fund was established.
Artist friends made works of art available that were sold by auction. One of the buyers was Queen Wilhelmina. Heuff remained an artist after he became blind; during these years he made ceramic sculptures.Heuff died in 1945 in his home called the Dorstige Kuil in Heemstede. Paintings by Heuff can be found in the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.
