Gène Eggen (1921, Ulestraten (Meerssen) – 2000, Maastricht) was a Dutch painter, glass painter, engraver, sculptor and monumental artist. In 1943, Eggen entered the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten (State Academy of Fine Arts) Amsterdam, where he studied under Heinrich Campendonk. Karel Appel, Corneille and Pieter Defesche were fellow students of him.
After completing his education, he returned to Ulestraten, where he spent the rest of his life. Although he was educated at the academy as a painter and an engraver, he made himself familiar with many techniques and became a versatile artist. By many Eggen is mainly regarded as a sculptor. Throughout his artistic life, he made frequent use of the colours blue and red in his paintings: his early works of the 1950s are quite dark, in the 1960’s his colours became exuberant, and from 1970 to 1990 he strived after a more quiet tonality. Thereafter his colours intensified again. Eggen has created a massive and varied oeuvre.
