Peter Hoogerwerf (Rotterdam, 1956) is a Dutch sculptor known for his realistic bronze sculptures of human and animal figures. Over the years, his oeuvre has increasingly focused on the female form, through which he has developed a unique, recognizable visual language.
Hoogerwerf studied sculpture at the Utrecht Academy of Fine Arts and Design and continued his studies at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam (1981–1987). After working for years from a studio in the former Heineken building near the Rijksmuseum, he later returned to his native region.
Central to his work is the modeling of the female figure in clay or wax, which is then cast in bronze using the cire perdue (lost wax) method. His sculptures—often standing female figures and bathers—evoke associations with the tradition of artists like Degas and Maillol. Yet, he is not concerned with anatomical perfection. For Hoogerwerf, anatomy is a means, not an end.
Poetry and gesture are at the heart of his sculptures. They are constructed from a refined interplay of open and closed spaces, graceful curves, and flowing lines. His compositions can be seen more as "signs" than exact casts of a random pose: they function as symbols, derived from reality yet simultaneously abstract. They can be read at a glance, while simultaneously leaving room for interpretation.
For Hoogerwerf, the woman is a model, not as an individual, but as the bearer of a state of mind. His sculptures depict human feelings in a playful, elegant, and vibrant formal language.
Although originally a sculptor, Hoogerwerf has expanded his artistic practice in recent years to include oil painting, continuing his exploration of form, expression, and symbolism in a new medium.
