- About the artist
Qiangli Liang (Guangzhou, China, 1964) primarily paints still lifes in the tradition of the seventeenth century, but with a unique, contemporary interpretation in which his Eastern background remains clearly palpable. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Guangzhou and has incorporated elements of Chinese culture—such as outward stillness, collective thinking, and the constant search for balance—into his Western painting practice.
His compositions are carefully constructed: objects familiar from classical still life art—fruit, bottles, bowls, jars, paper rolls, or boxes—are placed on a smooth tabletop. The image is centered, often viewed from a slightly elevated perspective. Both the tabletop and the back wall are understated and uniformly colored, giving the objects added emphasis. Liang deliberately limits the number of colors, allowing one or a few accents—a green pear, a red onion, a bright blue box—to command the attention. He is not only concerned with the objects themselves, but primarily with the balance between colors and surfaces.
That balance is never static. In his work, tension arises through color contrasts and the interplay of opposites: tranquility versus movement, serenity versus vitality, passivity versus activity. Liang uses subdued browns and grays as a background, applied coarsely and spontaneously with a brush or palette knife. His brushwork remains visible; objects are painted in impasto, giving his still lifes a lively and tangible quality.
As he himself says: “Constantly restoring the balance demands all my attention, and I must ensure I don't fall to either side.” His work is therefore not only an ode to the classical still life tradition, but also a personal quest for balance between East and West, tradition and modernity, stillness and movement.
