October is almost at a close, and it has proven to be an exciting month in the art world. The month of November promises to continue the flow of events and news stories, so here we introduce some highlights that are sure to kick-off the upcoming weeks. We also pay homage to a great author and art world contributor Linda Nochlin, who passed away this month.

Art World Highlights

Leonardo da Vinci painting titled 'Salvator Mundi'

Leonardo da Vinci, 'Salvator Mundi' c. 1500, courtesy of Christie's.

There has been a lot of discussion around "Salvador Mundi" - a portrait by the one and only Leonardo da Vinci - which is featured in Christie's upcoming November 15th sale. With a price tag of a whooping 100 million USD, it is sure to be a historical event ... no matter the outcome. It is reported that under 20 works by the artist's own hand survive, making this portrait of Christ exceptionally rare and thus coveted by many.. who can afford it.

Currently the painting is on its world tour, visiting Europe and Asia, so that potential buyers can view the work in person. It will soon return to New York for the live sale.

Art World Controversy

Artforum Magazine

Artforum magazine
Founded in 1962, author Sarah Thornton describes the magazine as: "Artforum is to art what Vogue is to fashion, and Rolling Stone was to rock and roll. It's a trade magazine with crossover cachet and an institution with controversial clout."

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Artforum's publisher Knight Landesman this past week, and now the attention is shifting towards the magazine itself. In total, 39 staff members have cited their frustration at the magazine and its publishers, for its poor handling of the sexual assault and harassment allegations against Mr. Landesman.

It looks like the art world is banning together, with multiple clients and galleries threatening to boycott the magazine altogether, in wake of the allegations. You can read the published statement here.
