Johannes Hermanus Barend Koekkoek is a famous Dutch artist. He was the third son of the marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek Sr, brother of Willem Koekkoek, and nephew of Barend Cornelis Koekkoek. His grandfather was the painter Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek. Koekkoek started painting in the romantic tradition of his father. In the early sea and river scenes his father’s influence is clearly visible in the careful painting style and fine detailing. Later he was influenced by the The Hague School and he painted beach and sea views in a freer manner.

Johannes Hermanus Koekkoek es considerado el padre fundador de la conocida dinastía de pintura Koekkoek. Nació en 1778 en Zelanda en Veere. Se formó en la Academia de Dibujo de Middelburg de orientación clásica mientras trabajaba en la fábrica de papel pintado de Thomas Gaal. Luego se especializó en pintar paisajes urbanos elaboradamente elaborados con agua, y paisajes marinos en particular. Fue uno de los primeros artistas de principios del siglo XIX en inspirarse en los pintores marinos del Siglo de Oro holandés. Sus pinturas revelan que tenía un gran conocimiento de los diferentes tipos de barcos que navegaban por los canales abiertos de Zelanda en ese momento. Murió en 1851 en Amsterdam.
