Fue un pintor postimpresionista holandés, hijo del pintor romántico Kaspar Karsen. Después de ser aprendiz de su padre, comenzó a seguir clases en la Royal Academy of Amsterdam. Karsen es conocido por sus composiciones de mal humor con granjas y, a menudo, una figura solitaria. Formó parte del movimiento literario 'Tachtigers'. El pintor falleció en 1941.
