Did you take a social-media break this weekend but have you now found yourself back at work with a busy week ahead and no time to catch up on what’s been going on in the art world? Here at Gallerease we are happy to keep you in the know with a couple of important updates:

1. Dutch photographer Rineke Dijkstra was awarded the Hasselblad Award, the world's most prestigious photography prize. Dijkstra is known for her intricate portraits and often works on long-term projects, photographing a series or a single person over time. Luckily, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam (SMA) is currently featuring her most iconic photographs alongside her early and recent video works in the exhibition Rineke Dijkstra: An Ode.

Open until August 6th!

2. Speaking of the SMA, if you do plan on visiting sometime in the near future, then make sure to also check out their most recent and spectacular trouvaille: a never-before seen drawing by Kazimir Malevich. The drawing was found by a researcher of the Khardziev collection and appears to be a study for the grand painting An Englishman in Moscow (1914), also on display in the museum.

3. We also highly recommend you pay a visit to Arnhem, where the stunning fine art collection of Marjolein de Groen and Peter Jordaan has finally been opened to the public.

A historical building on the central Weversstraat is the brand new home of pieces by Dutch and international contemporary artists, carefully selected by Marjolein and Peter based on criteria such as narrative, the working-process and the artist’s own stance regarding his or her work.

Guided tours of the Collection de Groen are available three days a week.

4. Moving on to the other side of the Dutch border: Germany. Last Friday marked the opening date of the 14th Documenta in Kassel, the world’s most important actual and contemporary art exhibition.

However, this is also the first time in the Documenta’s history that a parallel exhibition was initiated, in Athens to be exact. The refugee crisis thus forms an important narrative within the entire movement that Documenta has become, as demonstrated by Martha Minujin’s The Parthenon of Books.

This reconstruction of the famous Greek monument was made using once forbidden books and is symbolically located on the Friedrichsplatz, where Nazi’s burned thousands of books by Jewish authors in 1933.
