Jean Bertrand Andrieu was a French engraver of medal. He was born in Bordeaux, Aquitaine and died in Paris. He was a pupil of André Lavau. In 1786 he installed himself in Paris. In 1791 he made a commemorative coin for the 'pruse de la Bastille'and since that moment he was considered as the first medal engraver during the Napoleon regime. He made for example the famous medal of Napoléon and Marie-Louise afer a design by Dominique Vivant Denon. In France, Andrieu was considered as the restorer of the art, which had declined after the time of Louis XIV. During the last twenty years of his life, the French government commissioned him to undertake every major work of importance
