About the artist
Hendrik "Henk" van Leeuwen van Oudewater (1890–1972) was a distinguished Dutch Impressionist painter renowned for his evocative landscapes, tranquil cityscapes, and luminous winter scenes. Largely self-taught, he began his career as a house painter in the village of Ter Aar before dedicating himself entirely to fine art.
Through his keen observation of light and atmosphere, Van Leeuwen developed a refined Impressionist style characterized by loose yet confident brushwork and a subtle, harmonious palette.
Drawing inspiration from the Dutch countryside, historic towns, and frozen canals, his paintings capture the quiet beauty and changing moods of everyday life. His masterful treatment of light, weather, and reflection imbues his compositions with a timeless sense of serenity and authenticity.
Over the course of his career, Van Leeuwen exhibited widely and earned recognition as one of the respected Dutch Impressionists of the twentieth century.
