About the artist
Hendrik Johannes Martin (Henk) Zweerus (Bergen, July 24, 1920 - Oosterbeek, 2005) was a Dutch sculptor, painter, draftsman and teacher.Zweerus studied in Amsterdam at the Rijksacademie under Jan Bronner (1939-1944). In 1948 he married the artist Hedwig Weber (1922–1987). From 1950 to 1955 he was a teacher at the art academy in Enschede, where he taught Jan Kip and Gerard van der Leeden, among others. Visible in Amsterdam are Radius composition (on a facade in Osdorp), Horizontal composition (Leidsebosje) and Vertical composition (Valeriusplein). In 1962 the artist couple moved to Delft, where Zweerus succeeded Oswald Wenckebach as professor of form study and three-dimensional design at the Technische Hogeschool. He had a studio at the faculty and was associated with the school until 1982.The couple lived in Bergen (1969-1978) and finally settled in Oosterbeek. Zweerus exhibited several times and made various sculptures. A number of these have been placed in the sculpture garden of the Nijenhuis, part of the Museum de Fundatie. Zweerus'drawings are included in the collection of the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam.
