Karel Frederik Arkema (1901–1965) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist born in Appingedam, the Netherlands. Originally trained as a house painter, Arkema later developed himself as a fine artist, building a body of work that reflected a strong connection to everyday Dutch life and traditional urban and rural scenes.

Working primarily in painting and graphic arts, Arkema became known for his atmospheric compositions, often depicting architecture, streetscapes, interiors, and quiet observational moments. His style combined careful draftsmanship with a restrained yet expressive use of color and texture, capturing both the character and mood of his subjects.

Throughout his career, Arkema remained closely tied to Dutch artistic traditions while maintaining a personal and understated visual language. His works occasionally appeared in exhibitions and later at art auctions, including paintings such as Gezicht op achterhuis (1958), which reflects his interest in intimate architectural views and the poetry of ordinary surroundings.

Today, Arkema’s work is appreciated for its authenticity, craftsmanship, and subtle portrayal of mid-20th-century Dutch life.
