About the artist
Wim Rijvers was born on 27 July 1927 in Kessel, Limburg. After secondary school, he quickly opted for sculpture and studied at the Middelbare Kunstnijverheidsschool in Maastricht, followed by a study at the Jan van Eyck Academy. Here he developed under the influence of teachers such as Charles Vos and Oscar Jespers, and in 1956 he received the Prijs der Gemeente Heer for his graduation work.
After his studies, Rijvers returned to Kessel, where he set up his own studio and bronze foundry. His early work was still figurative, with human and animal figures in aluminium, but from the sixties onwards he developed a more abstract and expressive visual language. His sculptures were given a powerful, often stylised design, with a strong emphasis on movement, stillness and balance. He himself spoke of a search for "refined, mysterious expression" - a description that fits well with the spiritual and symbolic charge of much of his work.
Rijvers was mainly active as a maker of monumental sculptures in public spaces. In Limburg, Noord-Brabant and beyond, dozens of his bronze sculptures can be found, often with a commemorative or contemplative function. Well-known works include the war and peace monument in Kessel, De Zon van onze Hoop in Sint Anthonis, De Ontmoeting in Venray and sculptures in Baarlo, Blerick, Limbricht and Swalmen. His sculptures balance between abstraction and recognition and often evoke universal themes such as struggle, connection, freedom and hope.
In addition to his work as a sculptor, Rijvers taught at the Vrije Academie in Venlo, among others. He was appreciated as an inspired and uncompromising artist, with a preference for high-quality materials and craftsmanship. His smaller bronze unique works, such as Batailleur and Invasion, are still valued on the art market.
Wim Rijvers died on 3 February 2010 in Leveroy. His work lives on in the landscape and in the memories of many. He left behind a powerful and poetic oeuvre that continues to testify to his vision, craftsmanship and connection with people and the environment.
