Abcoude geschilderd door Joop Stierhout staande langs het water van de Angstel. Lieflijk pretentieloos schilderij met een ingetogen pastel-achtig coloriet waar Stierhout patent op lijkt te hebben. - About the artist
Joop Stierhout (Arnhem, 28 March 1911 – Amsterdam, 11 March 1997) was a Dutch impressionist painter, known for his lively harbour and cityscapes of Amsterdam. His work was strongly influenced by the traditions of the Hague School.
Early Life and Education
Born in Arnhem, Stierhout grew up in a family that ran a fashion store. His talent for drawing was noticed at an early age. After graduating from the Art Academy in Arnhem, he moved to Amsterdam to study at the National Academy of Fine Arts, where he was taught by J.H. Jurres and H.J. Wolter, among others.
Career and Artistic Development
Before the Second World War, Stierhout often painted landscape scenes in the Gooi and Vechtstreek. In 1940 he received the Royal Subsidy for Painting, but the war prevented him from travelling abroad. After the war he remained true to traditional craftsmanship and specialized in cityscapes, portraits and floral still lifes. From the eighties onwards his cityscapes acquired a lighter colouring, partly influenced by a stay in the French Provence.
Style and Themes
Stierhout painted in a colourful-impressionist style and focused on Amsterdam cityscapes, landscapes, floral still lifes and religious scenes. He was also a skilled portraitist and immortalized, among others, jubilee professors of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.
Recognition and Legacy
In 1938 his religious painting 'Hagar and Ishmael' was nominated for the Prix de Rome. His work is included in various collections and is still valued for its contribution to Dutch painting.
Joop Stierhout died on 11 March 1997 in Amsterdam, shortly before his 86th birthday. His legacy lives on in the many paintings that provide a timeless image of the Dutch landscape and city life.
