Dirk Smorenberg (Alkmaar, 4 September 1883 – Oud-Loosdrecht, 14 September 1960) was a self-taught Dutch painter, known as one of the few representatives of the Art Deco style in the Netherlands. His work is characterized by decorative representations of the North Holland landscape, especially his iconic water lilies.
Early Life and Education
Smorenberg was born in Alkmaar and began his professional painting career in 1906. Although self-taught, he was influenced by the Swiss expressionist Ferdinand Hodler, an influence he shared with his friend and fellow artist Dirk Filarski.
Travels and Influences
At the beginning of the First World War, Smorenberg traveled to St. Ives in England to paint. He also worked in Switzerland, near Montreux, and spent the years 1910-1911 in the United States, where he exhibited together with Piet Mondriaan in New York City.
Settlement in Oud-Loosdrecht
In 1924, Smorenberg settled in Oud-Loosdrecht, attracted by the watery landscape. Here he found his most characteristic subject: the water lilies. His paintings from this period show a decorative style with stylized forms and bright colors, which distinguished him from other painters who treated the same subject.
Personal life
Smorenberg married twice: in 1913 to Luisa Suzanna Kamerman, an actress, writer and painter known by the pseudonym Tula di Vista; this marriage was dissolved in 1923. In 1924 he remarried to Wilhelmina Neijsen.
Artistic Contribution and Legacy
As an independent and original artist, Smorenberg designed matching frames for a number of his works, which emphasizes his attention to detail and aesthetics. His unique approach and style have given him a lasting place in Dutch art history.
