- About the artworkMiquel Aparici’s sculptures are surprising assemblages made from old objects that had other uses in the past, and which the artist recovers and uses in a creative and ingenious way. The result is an original collection of unusual animals that test our imagination and invite us to discover the elements that make up each piece, in a fun game of observation requiring the complicity of the viewer.
His work is characterized by simplicity, since most of his pieces bring together few elements, resulting in very elegant compositions with simple lines, which together with his creativity, endow his pieces with great expressive power. He turns his drawings into three-dimensional beings, using the technique of assemblage with old utensils as well as molds and disused objects of wood and metal. Since then he has produced more than 350 pieces, representing all kinds of animals of different shapes and sizes, from a life-size elephant to tiny insects. Using the same technique, we also find among his sculptures musical instruments, rockets, masks and a collection of ‘secret books’. - About the artist
Miquel Aparici studied at the Massana School of Arts and Crafts in Barcelona and began his professional career as a graphic designer, a job he combined for some years with writing scripts for comics and television. He is currently art director of the magazine National Geographic España.
His artistic facet arose spontaneously, after a trip to Formentera, where he was fascinated by the natural beauty of the island and its fauna. At the end of the 1990s he began his professional career as an artist with an original collection of paintings of animals made with coffee and sugar, which he exhibited at the 3ArtBcn gallery, located in the old quarter of Barcelona, and which also led him to exhibit in New York City. And from paper he went on to turn his drawings into three-dimensional beings and to create sculptures using all kinds of utensils from old craft trades and disused wooden and metal objects that he combines creatively, using different types of techniques. His work is characterised by simplicity, as most of his pieces bring together few elements, resulting in very elegant compositions with simple lines, which, nevertheless, and thanks to their original combination, are endowed with great expressive force.
In addition to exhibiting in various galleries in Barcelona (Renè Metras, Jordi Barnadas, Loft, Llucià Homs, Montcada, Art Windows, Victor Lope, Villa del arte galleries among others), Miquel Aparici's work has travelled to other cities around the world (New York, Copenhagen, Freiburg, Madrid, Vienna and Milan), and has been exhibited at international fairs, such as ART Bodense (Austria), ART Copenhagen (Denmark) and Art Fair de Cologne (Germany), and in new places, such as the Museum of Natural Sciences of Barcelona and the Temple of the Sagrada Familia, which in 2005 brought together a curious selection of various pieces inspired by the animals sculpted by Gaudí. Other venues that have recently hosted an exhibition of his work are the Cristina Enea Foundation (San Sebastian), the Miramar Cultural Centre in Sitges (Barcelona) and the Natural Science Museum in Madrid.
His sculptures test the viewer's imagination, because they show familiar objects in a different context than usual, and performing a different function, which gives them a new identity. In this way, by appealing to wit and a sense of humour, the artist wins the audience's complicity and invites them to participate in his own game, which consists of recreating reality and transforming it into... art.
