Marcel Camps (Spanish, born 1973) is a contemporary sculptor whose work explores emotion, intuition, and the expressive potential of material and space. Based in Barcelona, Camps has developed a distinctive sculptural language in which emptiness, balance, and subtle color play a central role, resulting in works that are both powerful and introspective.
Camps began his artistic training in 1993 at L’Escola d’Arts i Oficis La Llotja in Barcelona, where he initially studied interior design before shifting his focus to sculpture. This early background continues to inform his strong sense of structure, spatial awareness, and material sensitivity. In 1997, he joined the technical team at the studio of Jaume Plensa, where he worked as an assistant for four years. This formative period exposed him to large-scale sculptural processes and reinforced the importance of craftsmanship, conceptual clarity, and emotional resonance.
In 2002, Camps traveled to Berlin to continue his artistic development, visiting the ADK – Akademie der Künste. It was there that the renowned sculptor Anthony Cragg encouraged him to fully commit to an independent career as a sculptor. This moment marked a turning point, giving Camps the confidence to pursue his own artistic voice.
Drawing deeply from personal experience and intuition, Marcel Camps works primarily with iron and wood, materials that lend his sculptures a sense of gravity, warmth, and authenticity. He also incorporates lead, copper, resin, glass, and stone, expanding his expressive vocabulary while maintaining a restrained and thoughtful approach. Emptiness is a key element in his work; voids and negative space are not absences but active components that shape meaning, emotion, and tension. The gradual introduction of color further enhances the emotional depth of his sculptures, adding nuance without overwhelming their quiet strength.
Marcel Camps’ work is held in both national and international collections, and he has participated in numerous contemporary art fairs. Through a careful balance of material, form, and silence, his sculptures invite reflection and emotional engagement, positioning him as a compelling voice within contemporary Spanish sculpture.
