  • About the artist

Feng Zhengjie (俸正杰), born in 1968 in Sichuan Province, China, is a contemporary artist living and working in Beijing and Jeju Island, South Korea. After initially working as an art teacher at a high school and college in Sichuan, he moved to Beijing in 1995 to pursue his artistic career.

Feng received his Bachelor of Fine Arts and Master of Fine Arts from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in Chongqing, China. His early work was influenced by posters from 1930s Shanghai and traditional Chinese folk art, particularly the “Mianzhu Nianhua,” a colorful style dating back to the Song Dynasty.

Feng is best known for his “Portrait of China” series, in which he creates large oil paintings of Chinese models with vacant, averted gazes. These portraits, executed in a red and turquoise palette, reflect his critique of contemporary consumer society and the influence of mass media on beauty ideals. His use of bright colors such as bright red, pink and green emphasizes the superficiality and materialism of modern society.

Feng's work has been exhibited internationally in renowned galleries and museums. He has had solo exhibitions at the Tilton Gallery in New York, the Tokyo Gallery in Japan and the Goethe Art Center in Taichung, Taiwan. His work is included in collections including the Guangdong Museum of Art in Guangzhou, the Busan Museum of Modern Art in Korea and the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Seoul.

As a prominent representative of the "School of Kitsch" in China, Feng Zhengjie continues to explore the complexities of identity and consumer culture. His work offers a critical perspective on the way traditional values clash with modern influences, and invites viewers to reflect on the impact of globalization on personal and cultural identity.

Through his unique approach and ongoing exploration of social issues, Feng Zhengjie has had a lasting impact on the contemporary art world, both within China and internationally.
