  • About the artist

Alfons Dessenis, also known as Alphonse Dessenis (1874–1952), was a Belgian painter, draftsman, and crayon artist whose work was closely connected to the artistic developments of Flanders in the early twentieth century. Born in Ghent, he studied at the Ghent Industrial School and later at the Municipal Academy of Fine Arts, where he received a solid academic training that laid the foundation for his artistic career.

Dessenis became associated with the renowned artists’ colony of Sint-Martens-Latem, one of Belgium’s most important artistic centers at the turn of the century. There he worked alongside fellow painters who sought inspiration in the rural landscapes, tranquil villages, and changing light of the Flemish countryside. His art reflects this environment through sensitive observations of nature and everyday life.

Throughout his career, Dessenis produced landscapes, portraits, figure studies, and still lifes. His style evolved from a more expressive approach toward a luminous and atmospheric form of Impressionism, characterized by subtle color harmonies and a keen interest in light. As both a painter and draftsman, he demonstrated remarkable technical skill and a refined sense of composition.

His works are appreciated for their quiet elegance and their ability to capture the character of the Flemish landscape. Today, Dessenis is regarded as a respected representative of Belgian painting from the first half of the twentieth century, and his paintings remain sought after by collectors of Belgian and Latem School art.

Alfons Dessenis passed away in Wemmel in 1952, leaving behind a body of work that reflects both the artistic traditions of his time and his personal sensitivity to light, atmosphere, and the natural world.
