  • About the artist

Adriaan van der Plas (Rotterdam, 1899 – Kerkrade, 1974) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman and monumental artist, best known for his religiously inspired work and his contributions to the reconstruction art in the Netherlands after the Second World War. His oeuvre, characterised by monumental power and spiritual depth, covers a wide range of techniques and formats: from stained glass windows to paintings, murals and mosaics.

Van der Plas was educated at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rotterdam and continued his studies in Paris, where he further immersed himself in classical techniques and religious art. His work shows influences of symbolism, but is also rooted in the tradition of modern devotion and Catholic imagery. He was able to translate traditional religious themes into a contemporary, accessible imagery that was recognisable and yet uplifting.

After the war, Van der Plas received numerous commissions for churches, monasteries and schools, especially in Limburg, where he eventually settled. In places like Kerkrade, Maastricht and Sittard, stained glass windows, Stations of the Cross and murals by him can still be found. His use of colour is clear and spiritually charged, with strong contours and clear symbolism.

Although Van der Plas was not considered to be part of the avant-garde, he played an important role in the revival of religious art in the Netherlands in the twentieth century. His work testifies to dedication, craftsmanship and a deep connection with the spiritual dimension of art. He left behind a monumental and valuable oeuvre that is still visible in the Dutch church landscape today.
