  • About the artist

Anton Heyboer was a Dutch painter and printmaker. He was born on the small island of Pulau Weh as the son of a Dutch mechanical engineer and a school teacher. In 1939 the family took a vacation in the Netherlands, but due to the outbreak of WWII they could not return and settled in the Netherlands. In 1951, he was admitted to a psychiatric hospital because of a nervous breakdown. In 1956 he married Erna Kramer and in 1961 he settled in a farm in Den Ilp. There, he lived with first three and later five women, making him a controversial artist. In the 1960s, his work became internationally known. His work was exhibited in the Documenta 2, 3, and 4. In 1984, he broke with the art market and secluded himself in Den Ilp, where he lived and worked until his death.
