Potlood op papier - About the artist
Henk Schellevis, working under the pseudonym Perdok (Utrecht, 1913 – Spanbroek, 2011), was a Dutch painter who worked in silence on a carefully constructed oeuvre throughout his life. Under his artist name Perdok he developed a recognizable style in which craftsmanship, tranquility and a deep connection with the Dutch landscape were central.
Although largely self-taught, Schellevis took lessons at various art schools and with individual teachers in his early years. His work – often signed Perdok – includes tranquil landscapes, village scenes, still lifes and portraits. He painted with a subtle use of colour and a sensitive touch, in which atmosphere and balance were more important than the pursuit of effect. His canvases exude tranquility, reflection and a certain timelessness.
In his hometown of Spanbroek he found inspiration in the North Holland landscape for decades. He worked steadily and without emphasis on public recognition, which is why his work became known mainly among enthusiasts, collectors and within the regional art world.
By consistently using his pseudonym, he separated his personal life from his artistry – a conscious choice that gave his work its own, autonomous place. Henk Schellevis alias Perdok leaves behind an oeuvre full of integrity and character, which testifies to dedication, craftsmanship and love for the simple beauty of the everyday.
