Ferdinand van Collen (Velsen 1651 – Breukelen 30 October 1735), lord of Gunterstein and Tienhoven, was administrator of the WIC and from 1689 director of the Society of Suriname. In 1694 he was appointed to the council, in 1696 as alderman in the town hall on Dam Square. During the War of the Spanish Succession he was a deputy in the field. His job was to decode secret letters from abroad addressed to Anthonie Heinsius. Between 1709 and 1718 he was a sheriff, but was promoted to the Orphan Chamber and Treasury in 1719. Through his wife Maria de Bordes he became lord of Gunterstein and Tienhoven in 1711. Four or five generations – all named Ferdinand – would continue the tradition. From 1727 he was mayor of Amsterdam.
