  • About the artist

Boniface is a Zimbabwean-born sculptor whose primary medium is driftwood, found wood, and mineralised or petrified wood. Using these materials, he creates unique, one-of-a-kind sculptures, predominantly abstract in form. His themes range from wildlife, birds, and marine or aquatic life to the human figure.

Boniface firmly believes that his work is not the creation of something new, but rather the completion of a form that nature itself began carving during the lifetime of the tree or piece of wood. His main responsibility as an artist is to connect with each specimen he finds and to reveal the hidden shape lying beneath the surface.

The finished sculptures are either polished or oiled, depending on the wood species. This final treatment enhances the natural beauty of the material, highlighting its organic colours and grain patterns.

Over the years, Boniface has established a network of people across Southern Africa who search for these hidden treasures on his behalf. They act as his suppliers and earn additional income through this collaboration. He currently works with wood sourced from Zimbabwe, Namibia, Malawi, and South Africa. No new wood is used; only pieces that have been dead for decades, if not centuries. Each piece is thoroughly cleaned, treated, and/or fumigated before the sculpting process begins.
