  • About the artist

Stef Jurriën (Amsterdam, 1953) is a Dutch visual artist whose work veers between stillness and alienation. Originally trained at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy, where he studied painting and graphics, Jurriën developed an early fascination for the tension between the everyday and the mysterious.

His early oeuvre is characterized by an investigative look at the boundaries of perception. With a keen eye for detail and a love of craftsmanship, Jurriën manages to make the silence in landscapes, interiors or faces tangible. In his graphics he searches for rhythm and repetition, often with subtle symbolism and a recurring play of light and shadow. The human presence is rarely explicit, but always palpable.

In the 1980s and 1990s his work found resonance within a broader, more philosophical movement in the Dutch art world. Jurriën rarely provides clear answers, but invites the viewer to silence, to look without judgment. His paintings often seem simple at first glance, but upon closer inspection they reveal a layered world full of doubts, dreams and memories.

Although he never explicitly profiled himself in the public domain, Jurriën has always consistently built on his work. He exhibited in modest but influential places, where connoisseurs and collectors appreciated his integrity and vision. In interviews he often emphasizes the importance of slowness in both making and looking. “A good painting cannot be rushed,” he says.

Stef Jurriën lives and works in silence, true to his own rhythm, his own world. His work is an ode to looking itself — to the moment when the viewer falls silent for a moment, and time stops ticking.
