SKATING AT THE AMSTEL Ice view of the Amstel: "Vue de l'Amstel hor de la Ville d'Amsterdam", copper engraving made by Georg Gottfried Winckler after the design by Peter Blanckert, published in Augsburg by Georg Bathalsar Probst second half of the 18th century. Hand-coloured in time. Dim. (print): 31.7 x 43.2 cm. This so-called optic print does not depict the grimness of the season, but rather the amusement and fun on ice on a frozen Amstel river. Young and old are on skates. Some go down, others rest for a while or tighten their skates. At a koek-en-zopie (snack bar) tent, the flag flies cheerfully in the air and chocolate milk and warm beer are served. Sleds are used to go on fun rides. Sleighs are used to show off.
