  Dit schilderij toont een weids, licht golvend landschap op het Groningse platteland, gezien vanaf een iets verhoogd standpunt. Op de voorgrond liggen samengebonden schoven graan, grof en stevig neergezet met zichtbare, snelle penseelstreken. Het pad dat schuin door het veld loopt, leidt het oog naar de horizon, waar lage boompartijen en enkele boerderijvormen het landschap begrenzen onder een bleke, licht bewolkte lucht. Wat meteen opvalt, is de losse, vibrerende toets: korte streken in geel, oker, groen en zachte roodtinten suggereren het spel van licht over het veld. De verf lijkt bijna schetsmatig aangebracht, zonder harde contouren, waardoor het geheel een levendige, tijdelijke indruk geeft. Hier zie je duidelijk hoe Jannes de Vries in deze vroege fase vooral bezig is met het vangen van sfeer en licht, eerder dan met expressieve vervorming. De invloed van Vincent van Gogh is goed herkenbaar: in de ritmische penseelvoering, de nadruk op het agrarische motief, en de manier waarop kleur en lijn samen het landschap laten trillen van energie. Toch blijft het hier rustiger en minder dramatisch dan bij Van Gogh. Binnen het kader van De Ploeg is dit vroege werk bijzonder, omdat het laat zien dat Jannes aanvankelijk een impressionistische koers volgde, terwijl veel andere ploegleden juist al sterker richting het expressionisme bewogen. Dat hij later zelf ook die expressievere stijl omarmde, maakt dit schilderij extra interessant: het is een momentopname van een kunstenaar in ontwikkeling, nog dicht bij de waarneming, maar al met een zekere vrijheid in toets en kleur die vooruitwijst naar zijn latere werk.

  Jannes de Vries (Meppel, 29 May 1901 – Groningen, 8 December 1986) was a versatile Dutch artist, known as a painter, graphic artist, illustrator and drawing teacher. He is often associated with the Groningen art circle De Ploeg, to which he made an important contribution.

  Early years and education

  At the age of fifteen, De Vries started as a clerk at a law firm in Meppel. His employer recognized his artistic talent and allowed him to go to Amsterdam in 1920 to study at the Rijksnormaalschool voor Tekenleraren. In 1922 he obtained his MO certificates in Hand and Line Drawing.

  Travel and artistic development

  After a short period as a drawing teacher in Meppel, De Vries left for Paris in 1923, where he enrolled at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. In addition to this traditional education, he also studied at the Académie Colarossi in Montparnasse. His travels then took him to Italy and North Africa, especially Tunisia, where the rich hues and light made a deep impression on him. These experiences had a significant influence on his later work.

  De Ploeg and professional career

  In 1924, De Vries settled in Groningen and became a member of the art circle De Ploeg. He participated in various exhibitions and served as chairman in 1926. In addition to his artistic work, he worked as a part-time drawing teacher at the Stedelijk Gymnasium in Groningen and was active as an illustrator and advertising artist. This versatility allowed him to explore a wide range of artistic disciplines.

  Style and technique

  De Vries developed a unique style that combined elements of expressionism and impressionism. His works are characterized by expressive brushwork and a lively use of color. He often painted landscapes, both in the Netherlands and in North Africa, and was able to capture the essence of his subjects with a dynamic and colorful approach.

  Later years and legacy

  After retiring as a teacher in 1966, De Vries had more time to travel and paint. He remained active in the art world and received the Cultural Prize of the province of Groningen in 1970. His work is included in various private collections and museums, including the Groninger Museum.

  Jannes de Vries left behind a rich artistic legacy that reflects the diversity and depth of his talents. His contributions to Dutch art, both as an artist and as a teacher, remain a source of inspiration for future generations.
