  • About the artist

Lizzy Ansingh was a Dutch painter who was born in Utrecht on 13 March 1875. Her aunt Thérèse Schwartze gave Lizzy drawing-lessons and encouraged her niece to develop her artistic career. She introduced her to various painters, among others the Dutch painters George Hendrik Breitner, Piet Mondriaan and Simon Maris. Between 1894-1897 Lizzy studied at the Amsterdam Royal Academy of Visual Arts. There a lasting friendship was born between a group of female painters, later called the Amsterdamse Joffers: Lizzy Ansingh, Marie van Regteren Altena, Suze Bisschop-Robertson,Coba Ritsema, Ans van den Berg, Jacoba Surie, Nelly Bodenheim, Betsy Westendorp-Osieck and Jo Bauer-Stumpff. She was also a member of the Amsterdam art circles Arti et Amicitiae and Sint Lucas. She died in Amsterdam on 14 December 1959.
