Jacques Bergmans was a Belgian painter who lived and worked in Ghent for almost his entire life. He gained renown for his atmospheric cityscapes of Ghent, historical monuments, interiors, and landscapes. In his work, he subtly managed to capture the character and atmosphere of the old Flemish cities, often with a particular attention to light, architecture, and serene compositions.
Bergmans painted in a traditional, figurative idiom and aligned himself with the Belgian Impressionist and Post-Impressionist tradition of the early twentieth century. His oeuvre shows a strong connection to historic Ghent, of which he immortalized countless streets, squares, churches, and canals. In addition to cityscapes, he also created still lifes, rural scenes, and intimate interiors.
Thanks to his technical craftsmanship and recognizable style, Jacques Bergmans grew into a valued representative of Belgian painting from the first half of the twentieth century. Today, his works can be found in both private collections and on the international art market.
