  • About the artist

Cornelis "Cees" Bolding (7 January 1897 – 1 November 1979) was a versatile Dutch painter, draftsman and lithographer, known for his cityscapes, landscapes, harbour views, portraits and still lifes.

    Education and early career

Bolding was born in Wormerveer and received his artistic education at the Rijksschool voor Kunstnijverheid in Amsterdam, followed by the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten, where he studied under the guidance of J.H. Jurres and Nicolaas van der Waay.

After his studies he specialised in painting various subjects, including cityscapes, landscapes, portraits and sea and harbour views.

    Artistic contributions and exhibitions

In 1928 Bolding took part in the art competition during the Summer Olympics, where his work was exhibited.

In addition, his work was on display in the exhibition and sale "Onze Kunst van Heden" in 1939 at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

    Teaching and memberships

From 1937 to 1963, Bolding taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in The Hague, the last 18 years as deputy director. He was a member of artists' associations such as Arti et Amicitiae and Sint Lucas in Amsterdam and was a co-founder of the Maatschappij Rembrandt.

    Style and themes

Bolding's work is characterized by a realistic style with an impressionistic touch. His paintings show a keen eye for detail and a profound understanding of light and shadow, which is particularly visible in his cityscapes and harbor views. His travels to places such as Volendam and Scheveningen inspired many of his works, in which he captured daily life and maritime activities.

    Legacy

Cees Bolding died on November 1, 1979 in The Hague. His work remains valued and is still exhibited and collected, which testifies to his lasting influence on Dutch painting.
