  • About the artist

Margot Hudig-Heldring (1909–1996) was a Dutch sculptor distinguished by her refined sense of form and the human warmth she conveyed in her work. Born in Rotterdam to a wealthy family, she chose an artistic path early on that brought her into contact with the leading art schools of her time. Hudig-Heldring studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, where she was influenced by, among other things, the classical sculptural tradition and its emphasis on craftsmanship and mastery of materials.

Her oeuvre includes portraits, figure studies, and small sculptures, often executed in bronze, plaster, or stone. She subtly abstracted human features, giving her sculptures a timeless quality. Hudig-Heldring had a keen eye for character and emotion, and her portraits combine technical mastery with a restrained psychological depth.

In addition to her independent work, she participated in exhibitions organized by organizations such as the Dutch Circle of Sculptors, establishing her position among professional artists in the interwar and postwar periods. Her style remained rooted in figuration, even as abstraction and experimental forms increasingly came to the forefront in sculpture.

In her later years, Hudig-Heldring worked more quietly but remained active in the art world. Her work can be found in private collections and several public venues in the Netherlands. Margot Hudig-Heldring died in 1996 but is remembered as an artist who prioritized the human scale and managed to maintain a refined, personal tone within the tradition of Dutch sculpture.
