  • About the artist

Léo Gausson was a French painter, sculptor and graphic artist who was one of the forgotten pioneers of post-impressionism. Born and died in the quiet town of Lagny-sur-Marne, he spent most of his life in the shadow of the great Parisian art scene, but his work reflects a striking originality and experimental drive that makes him a unique figure in French art history.

Initially trained as a sculptor, Gausson was captivated early on by the innovative power of impressionism, but he soon developed his own style that anticipated the synthetism of artists such as Paul Gauguin. In the 1890s he produced colourful, simplified paintings in which forms were reduced to their essence and colour planes were combined in an almost decorative way. His landscapes around the Marne, often painted together with artist friends such as Émile-Gustave Cavallo-Péduzzi and Maximilien Luce, testify to a deep connection with nature and a striving for spiritual clarity.

Gausson co-founded the École de Lagny, a regional school of painting that applied the principles of pointillism and post-impressionism to the rural landscape of Île-de-France. Although he never achieved the fame of his contemporaries in Paris, he continued to experiment – including as a graphic artist, where he evoked a subtle and poetic world with wood engravings and etchings.

His reclusiveness and modesty contributed to his work being neglected for decades, but in recent years there has been growing appreciation for his role as a bridge between impressionism, symbolism and modern movements. Léo Gausson remained active into old age and died in 1944 in his hometown, where his legacy is slowly but surely being rediscovered as a quiet but significant voice in French art.
