- About the artist
Peter Durieux (born 1951) is a Dutch artist known for his tranquil and carefully composed paintings and drawings. His work exudes a unique balance between observation and imagination: landscapes, interiors, and cityscapes are not simply captured, but acquire a quiet, almost timeless quality.
Durieux began his artistic development at a time when painting was in a state of flux, but consciously chose his own path. Instead of grand gestures or radical experiments, he focused on the slow and intensive exploration of his subjects. His work is characterized by clarity and tranquility, with an attention to detail that is never cold, but rather warm and human.
A key theme in his oeuvre is light. Whether it's the soft shadow of a facade, the glow of a summer afternoon, or the subtle nuances of a gray sky: light is always the silent protagonist in Durieux's work. In this way, he connects to a long tradition of Dutch art, but gives it his own understated and contemporary twist. Besides his work as a painter, Durieux also dedicated himself to his artistic calling as a profession and a way of life. He exhibited nationally and internationally, and his work found its way into private collections and museums. Time and again, he demonstrates how mindfulness and slowness can counterbalance the speed of modernity.
Peter Durieux's oeuvre is an ode to the quiet power of seeing: the ability to discover beauty in the ordinary and to translate that into images that are enduringly moving.
