  • About the artist

Chris Nobels (born 1943) lives and works in the heart of the Green Heart of South Holland. His subjects are literally all around him: polders, rivers, lakes, and expansive waterways. He also paints and draws beach, dune, and seascapes. The Dutch landscape is his inexhaustible source of inspiration, which he captures with great dedication and precision.

Nobels always works from observation. He enters the landscape, chooses his vantage point, and surveys the whole, without losing his attention to detail. He often begins with carefully crafted pencil drawings on-site, which later serve as the basis for oil paintings in his studio. His compositions are carefully balanced: realistic, subdued, and clearly structured.

His use of color is muted and balanced, which contributes to the tranquility and recognizability of his works. When photographed, his paintings sometimes appear almost photographic, but in reality, their artistic power is revealed precisely in the details. There, in the brushstroke, the nuance of light, or the shadow on the water, reveals the tension that distinguishes his work.

With his paintings, Chris Nobels pays tribute to the Dutch landscape: familiar and recognizable, yet always surprising in its beauty. His work invites us to pause and observe attentively—as attentively as the artist himself does.
