Gerard (Ger) Lataster (Schaesberg, 16 February 1920 – Amsterdam, 19 March 2012) was a Dutch painter who is considered part of Abstract Expressionism. His work is represented in numerous museum collections in the Netherlands and abroad, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht. - About the artist
Ger Lataster (Schaesberg, 16 February 1920) can be counted amongst the abstract expressionists. Having studied at the Industrial Art College in Maastricht, he then studied at the National Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam.
Lataster is able to apply abstract expressionism to the extreme. By using contrasting elements, techniques and materials, he knows how to surprise the observer time and again. Because Lataster uses these techniques consistently, his artworks come across as reliable, however great the changes to them were in recent years.
Well-known works by Lataster are the painting 'Spelende kinderen' (children playing) - made in1954, and commissioned by the municipality of Heerlen - and the monumental ceiling painting for the Mauritshuis museum in The Hague, Icarus Atlanticus, 1987-1988. Lataster is one of the most successful Dutch artists of his generation.
